Fashion Friday: Closet Organization for Busy Women

June 11, 2010
Here are some tips and tricks (that I use!) to keep my closet organized and make my mornings go a little more smoothly…
1) Invest in Good Hangers
I recommend wooden hangers.  They’re aesthetically pleasing and wear well.  Try to use the same type of hanger for all of your clothes so they will be spaced evenly.

2) Separate the Seasons
Store out-of-season items separately.  Putting away your sweaters and coats this time of year frees up valuable real estate.

3) Shelf Your Shoes
I prefer my shoes on shelves rather than an over-the-door shoe rack.  I flip one shoe to be in the opposite direction to allow for more pairs on a shelf.  I also organize them by use and size – formal shoes on the top shelf and tall boots on the bottom or floor.

4) Group by Type
Find an order that works for you.  My closet is organized (left to right) Jeans, Jackets, Sweaters/Long Sleeve Tops, Short Sleeve/Tank Tops, Dresses, Skirts and Pants.

5) Group by Color
Within the types of clothes (Short Sleeve/Tank Tops, for example), I organize by color in a rainbow-type fashion with white and black at the end.

6) Find a Jewelry Organizer
Whether it be a box, stand or hooks, keep your jewelry nice and tangle-free.  I have a stand for necklaces and a box for earrings and pins.  There is great inspiration from lots of blogs out there for creative ways to store your jewelry.

7) Handbag Helpers
To help handbags keep their shape, stuff them with crumpled paper.  You can place them on a shelf, use storage boxes or a hanging rack.
